At 16, Dave Power discovered his mother’s
dusty, old Carmentica guitar and found that he couldn’t put
it down.
‘It unlocked me, in a powerful and overwhelming way,’
says Dave. ‘I’d played other instruments before, but this
guitar seemed the perfect accompaniment to my voice, and the perfect
tool through which to write songs.’
Having grown up in North Queensland, Dave left Australia in his late
teens to travel the world, taking the guitar with him everywhere he
went.
‘While I was living in Edinburgh, I'd sit on Calton Hill, next
to the Dugald Stewart Monument, and play and paint the guitar. There’s
a photo of the paintings inside the cover of my latest EP, Addiction.
In a sense, my music all started with that guitar, so it's fitting
that it's pictured as my ‘addiction’, if you like.’
The addiction has paid off for Dave, who has since honed his vocals
and song-writing skills and is now regarded as one of the most exciting
new voices on the thriving Brisbane music scene. His new original
EP, Addiction, has been highly anticipated by listeners and DJs alike.
About the EP, Dave says, “These songs represent where I've been,
how I've loved and who I've become. They're raw, honest words that
identify the trail that I've trodden. I've been waiting for years
to create this EP - it's a stake in the ground that now allows me
to move into the future.”
And his future looks increasingly bright. Not only did Dave win the
4BC Talent Search, his demo CD rated in the top 5 of the Chartsong
Studios CD search, and, most recently, two tracks off his new EP,
‘Addiction’ and ‘Lovestruck’, were voted song
of the day on internet podcaster FM102x.
‘Addiction’ was recorded with the help of talented local
producer, James North. Since its completion in early August, the EP
has attracted thousands of listeners to Dave’s MySpace page,
and has received solid internet radio airplay, and great support from
the public.
Dave draws on a number of influences for his work, including Bob Dylan,
John Mayer, Chris Isaac, Dave Matthews and James Taylor. Like these
artists, Dave has a special gift for storytelling through song, representing
his passions for life and love through his music.
With his distinct guitar style and a clear, strong voice, Dave remains
a crowd favourite at venues along the east coast, and continues to
be invited to perform at numerous festivals and events.
